In February 2023, construction began on a new QuickRun gas station and convenience store in downtown Crete, Illinois, 30 miles south of the Chicago Loop in Will County. One of the key goals was aligning the project’s design with the architectural interest and character of the unique and charming community.
The 4,500-square-foot building was planned for a lot of approximately 21,830 square feet, with the site accommodating an existing underground fuel storage tank. As a result, the gas station canopy and main entrance needed to face a secondary road, resulting in one side of the building facing Crete’s downtown Main Street. Given this configuration, the side elevation was designed to reflect the character of Main Street, incorporating architectural elements such as a recessed entry way and a horizontal articulation.
A key challenge facing WT Group’s Civil Engineering team was addressing both the existing underground storage tank and the elevations of existing roadways to provide safe and easily accessible entrances and exits. Further, both the Civil Engineering and Architectural teams had to alter designs to allow for the installation of a new tank in a very restrictive area. And as the project progressed, the site evolved from an original design of a two-story structure with apartments above to an open-ceiling market.
This project is another example of WT Group providing a single, turnkey solution and delivering the flexibility to respond to changes and alterations as the project developed. WT Group disciplines engaged in the project included: Survey, Civil, Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural and Design & Program Management.
